Surat ships more sarees than any other city in India. Most of that volume is machine-made or printed — Surat's textile markets (Ring Road, the JJ AC Textile Market, Radha Krishna Textile Market) are built around speed and scale. Hand-painting runs against that grain entirely: it's slow, manual, and can't be sped up without losing what makes it hand-painted in the first place.
We're one of the smaller number of operations in the city actually painting sarees in-house, rather than trading them.
Manufacturer vs. Trader: Why the Difference Matters to You
In Surat's saree trade, a "supplier" can mean two very different things. A trader buys finished stock from various painters and artisan groups and resells it — prices and quality shift order to order depending on who had stock. A manufacturer paints the saree themselves, start to finish, which means the person taking your order is the same person who can tell you exactly how long it'll take, what it'll cost, and why.
If you're sourcing for a boutique or export brand, this distinction decides whether your fifth reorder looks like your first.
Inside Our Atelier
We've been painting sarees since 2002. Today that's 20+ master painters working across silk, chiffon, georgette, organza, and cotton, with a production process that runs:
- Design intake — your reference image, sketch, or brief
- Sampling — one piece painted and sent for your approval
- Production — your full order, painted to the approved sample
- Quality check — every piece photographed before packing
- Dispatch — courier or sea freight, with export documentation
Every saree is painted stroke by stroke — no screen printing, no digital transfer. That's slower and more expensive than printed alternatives, and it's also the entire reason buyers come to us instead of a printing unit.
Visiting the Atelier
We're located at Kosad, Surat, Gujarat, and we welcome wholesale buyers to visit in person — many international buyers combine a visit with trips to other Surat textile suppliers. Contact us ahead of time and we'll walk you through the full painting process and show current stock and samples.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Surat known for saree manufacturing?
Surat is India's largest textile and saree manufacturing hub, home to a dense network of textile markets, weaving units, and finishing workshops. Most of that volume is machine-made or printed; hand-painting operations are a smaller, more specialized segment of the city's trade.
What's the difference between a saree manufacturer and a saree trader in Surat?
A manufacturer paints or produces sarees in-house and controls quality directly. A trader buys finished stock from various sources and resells it, so quality and consistency can vary between orders depending on who had stock available.
Can I visit a hand-painted saree manufacturer's atelier in Surat?
Yes, most manufacturers — including us — welcome wholesale buyers to visit by appointment, see the painting process, and review current stock and samples in person.
